Military Body Armor
Military body
armor has been around for thousands of years. Warring tribes
would don animal hides and plant material around their bodies when
they went out to battle against rival tribes. They would also wear
the gear when they went out hunting for food for their tribe
members.
As
civilizations developed, military body armor developed into some
very sophisticated pieces of equipment. If you look back at
ancient Rome and medieval times, you will see that their
armor was almost impenetrable. Keep in mind that battles did not
involve any high tech weaponry. Wars were pretty much left to
hand-to-hand combat.
However, with the
invention of guns and cannons, the original military body armor was
not particularly effective because it was just a thin layer of
metal. The thickness of the armor was increased, however it proved
to be quite heavy and difficult to move around
in.
During the
1960's, the first bullet resistant military body armor was
developed. A soft body armor suit was relatively comfortable to
wear. It is made from advanced woven fibers that are sewn into
vests and other soft types of clothing.
There are two types
of military body armor or body armor available today. There is the
hard style and the soft style. The hard style is made from thick
metal or ceramic plates. It is said to function in the same manner
as the suits of armor worn by medieval knights. This is a very hard
suit that will deflect a bullet. The protection provided by this
type of suit is more than is provided by a soft suit. However, due
to the weight of the suit it is much more cumbersome to move around
in.
The heavy style
military body armor is worn during extremely high-risk events.
During regular lower risk events, the soft style armor is worn. It
is much more flexible and is worn like a jacket.
