Earthquake Survival Kits
Can earthquake survival kits help save lives? Earthquakes strike without any warning
or signs of its coming. Many lives have been taken by natural calamities such as flash flood, tsunami but nothing comes closer to the
figure affected by an earthquake. These tragic events could have not been avoided but the damage could have been minimized if only we knew
what and how to prepare. And, when it does, the results are just overwhelming number of innocent lives.
How would you protect your family then from the violent attacks of an earthquake? Earthquake survival kits are no longer new to
both you and me since many life preservationists have been lobbying and exhorting everyone to prepare one. Some people may be too busy to
prepare and organize one. For some, it may be an additional expense or for some, they just don’t know what and how to prepare it. Luckily,
for the latter, this article aims to help you prepare the basic needs that comprise most earthquake survival kits.
The best preparation everyone could do is to first eliminate hazards in your
home. Make sure to fasten shelves securely to the wall to avoid them from falling on you during an earthquake. Heavy objects should be
placed in the lowest portion of the shelf while items that are breakable should be placed inside a closet.
Check for any structural defects in your home for this may cause danger to your family and might be the first thing that will
burry you alive. Most people die not because of the effects of the calamity but because of panic. Learn how to compose yourself and how to
react on emergencies like “Drop, Cover and Hold On!” reaction. Coordinate with your local authorities on the schedule of trainings and
seminars on how to respond to emergencies like this.
Now for the essential things that should be included in every earthquake survival kits. It should include bottled water, first aid
kit and extra medication for those who regularly need it, flashlights, batteries, blankets and personal toiletries. Substantial amount of
non-perishable foods such as canned goods should be included in the kit.
Make sure the amount of food is enough for the whole family to share for at least 72 hours. If you have pets, you should include their food, a
can opener and a local map. For the most part, those are just some of the necessary things that you should prepare in case of emergency because
we never know they would happen.
